Putah seems to finally be picking up a bit,I think the fish have found their comfort zone with the higher flows and are more willing to grab a fly when presented properly.I've been having more luck with caddis patterns than anything else, and even had a little dry fly action as well (caddis and mayfly patterns).Myself and my wife took a trip to Jamaica near Negril and stayed at a wonderful all inclusive resort called the Grand Lido. One of the many many things I did was look for a fishing guide to take me fishing for tuna;barricuda;sailfish and a host of other species.Who I found was a local man by the name of "King Jango".When I approached his boat I almost panicked,it was a 14 ft wood antique that was literally falling apart at the seams and didnt look pond worthy let alone sea worthy.I did a Hail Mary and jumped on board, the king cranked up the 2 stroke 20 hp motor and we headed out to sea.....way way way out to sea,to the point where I could barely see the Island. The water was rough and the swells would totally swallow our little boat,it was this point where I noticed that the frame batons of the little boat were actually separating from the wood hull and the only thing holding things together were some rusty nails and screws Jango haphazardly installed to keep things from falling apart. It was this point when I decided to ask if he had ever broke down out here before, his answer was "Ya mon but not this far out!"So my next question was,do you have a phone? The answer was "Ya mon but no coverage!!!" It was this point when I put down all of my want to catch a fish and meekly asked if we could head back to shore after only 1.5 hrs in the water.I told him I had a cooking class to go to that I forgot about(didnt want to hurt King Jango's feelings). It was an expensive boat ride 140.00 but he did throw in a free conch shell as a parting gift! The rest of the trip was absolutly wonderful and I cant wait to go back.We paid only 599.00 per person for 5 full days of paradise, that included all drinks top notch food allyou can eat lodging and activities galore. Our next trip is in Feb 2008 to Spain and the Greek islands on a cruise ship for 12 days again all inclusive for only 499.00 per person! For more info on this trip and many many more check out the travel website on the cover page of my flyfishing site and click on the (power search) or call myself or my wife if you have any questions. See ya Bono
Glad you enjoyed Jamaica Greg. We have been twice in the last five years. We go to the northeast side of the island in a town called Port Antonio. Last time we took out a boat for a half day but did not hook anything. I had never been ocean fishing before and we had no less than six lines on some weird downrigger things in the water. Unfortunately we have become scuba addicts the last couple years. Now we go to an even smaller island off the coast of Venezuela named Curacao which is only one extra hour flight southeast. You have no idea what fresh fruit is until you go to the caribbean.
