Well it was a beautiful day on this creek this morning.  However, I still have yet to get my first putah creek trout.  I started out this morning at about 7:30am at Access #5 and I got two bites on a #16 and #18 copper john, however did not land them.  The water was quite a bit higher than the last time I went out, however that was the beginning of April. I also fished by the dam, and saw a lot of guys fishing with spinner that were producing.  Just thought I would let everyone know.

I made it out to the creek today as well after my midterm.  The fishing was pretty slow, and the water was high--655 cfs.  That's a jump from yesterday when it was 612 cfs.  The wind picked up around 6PM but died down by 7:30PM.  I checked out the area around the bridge today.  They've done some serious rearranging of rock at the mouth of Cold Creek.  Most of the huge rocks were pushed back up where they came from.  It will be difficult for those without waders to fish this section now unless they want to get wet.  Back to fishing.  I hooked about 8 fish, landing 2.  Both fish landed took midges.  There were tons of fish rising right before dark.  It was hard to tell what they were taking.  There were spent midges, caddis, and mayflies on the surface.  A spent midge pattern got a couple of takes.

I was standing there fishing when I heard a noise behind me.  I looked to see a doe coming down the hill.  She froze when I looked at her.  Pretending that she wasn't there, I looked away.  She came the rest of the way down the hill to the water for a drink about 3 rod lengths away.  After drinking for a few minutes, she went back up the hill.  That was awesome!

I made it out to the creek on Thursday morning for 3 hours.  I caught only one 11 inch fish.  What struck me was the clarity of the water.  It was as clear as I have ever seen it and I have fished Putah quite a bit over the years.  My gut feel is that the clear water has  either made the fish spooky, made them go deeper, or even forced them to retreat to the deepest water.  In any case, I found the fishing to be very tough.
