Hey guys I am fishing the lower Yuba this weekend and I was wondering if any of you have any tips or have been out there recently. I haveread some articles about it and some recent reports, but I would really appreciate any personal input you guys might have because I have never fished there before. thanks Charlie

I'll start by saying i am defenitly no expert on the lower yuba, but i have fished it 3 times in last six months or so. i'd suggest skawala stonefly's, golden stonefly's, and your usual caddis and midge patterns, hatches usually happen late afternoon into the evening, most people say that theres really no need to get there at the crack of dawn, but I usually do. I would suggest you start at the hwy. 20 bridge, park at parks bar and work upstream, if that dosent produce I'd go and park on the other side of the bridge and work downstream. May want to take a sink tip and swing some wooly buggers. The yuba is quit a bit larger then putah, so your gonna be casting much further, but theres alot of room for casting, its pretty much wide open area. This is a beautiful river, has been gin clear when I was there last but maybe a little stained now, but, stained is good according to a guide I have talked to recently. The fish are known for being abnormally hard fighting. One more thing is, If you park on the far side of the bridge you need to access the river right near the bridge and stay near the high water mark because the area has some pvt property and the owner is a complete a#$hole, theres a road that goes downstream that is open to the public but you will see pvt property signs along the road and technically you are tresspassing if you access the river thourgh that area. The owner sometimes post kids to guard that area, and he will call the sheriff on you, the guy is a real peice of work, but just stay near the river and your fine. I'm sure theres some steelhead in the river at this time as well. The spot I like the best is a good mile downstream from the bridge maybe a lil more, here the river slows a bit and gets a lil deeper. good luck and let us know how you do, I have been planning to get up there soon. Looks like the flows are really good right now !
I understand the yuba is FLAT right now and has been that way since it was blown out last spring...that being said also heard there are some mayflies coming off and pts are a good bet. Good luck. Haven't fished it in a while though.
Had a tough time out on the Yuba today and yeasterday but managed to sneak a few fish. A storm passed through yesterday and it was really windy for a while, but it let up in the afternoon and the cloud cover helped the bite a little. I got two yesterday on bead head pt's size 16 and lost one more good sized one that bit a prince in the same size. Also caught a 3lb bass in smith creek later that day.The skwalas are pretty much done but there are a few nymphs left here and there. Plenty of caddis larvae, bwo nymphs, midges, march brown nymphs, pmd nymphs and something really tiny that the fish seemed to like. With the sunset came a big hatch of march browns, bwo, and that tiny fly but I was unable to score despite many rises right near me. I fished mostly in the area around sycamore ranch and a little bit by the hwy 20 bridge. Today was slow. Bright skies after the storm hhad the fish nailed to the bottom. They relaxed a bit towards the afternoon and began to rise to some tiny stuff coming off, but I couldn't find a good presentation. Overall I got my butt kicked this weekend but it was worth it. Good luck if anyone else makes it out there.
