Float Tubing and Signs on the Creek

JT

I thought I had to work on some other projects this weekend, but I can now put in some time tomorrow.   If anyone wants to meet and talk about signs tomorrow I will be at access 1 tomorrow at noon.  I plan to float above access 1.  If we can get some people together it would be fun to float from access 5 down through the lake later.  It would be nice for everyone to put in some money and post signs on the creek to notify everyone.  If you don't have a float tube Access 1 is also a fairly good place to wade at high flows.

I won't be able to make it today (Sunday).  I can go next Saturday, though.  I'm still trying to get a hold of someone from the DFG.  We just keep playing phone tag.  It sounds like things are going to work out but when, is the issue now.  However, we really need to get something done as soon as possible.  I see people out there every time I fish who are trying to use bait.  Doesn't any read the regs anymore?  Friday I talked to three different groups of people.  One kid was fishing across from me and I told him about the special regs.  His dad came over and asked, "Do you think they're gonna be that hard on a 10 year old kid?"  I answered, "Probably not, but they'll be pretty hard on his dad!"  That kind of attitude bothers me.  If the kid ever gets busted for shoplifting is the dad going to pull the 10 year old kid excuse?  The law is the law.  It's there for a reason.

OK next Saturday at noon access 1.  I have seen the signs of the bait fishers all over the creek the past few weeks.  They leave the usual grouping of beer cans and soda cans wherever they decide to fish.

Jt,

Hey were you able to contact the DFG to see if they would let us post signs?

I've called a couple of times this week, but the guy won't return my calls.  Chemdoc said that it's pretty hard to get a hold of him.

JT,

Are you still going out to the creek? I may be up there before 12. Gordon said he was going to float above access 1 this morning. I may be up there trying to see how the fishing is. I will be driving a black durango. I figure I could give you a check for laminating, and if we aren't allowed to put up signs you could just tear it up.

I can't make it today Otter due to my son's birthday.  However, you can count on my support both in time and financially.  Let me know what is needed.

How was the fishin guys ? I fished below the big island at #5 today, only got one fish about 15 incher on a #14 hares ear on a sink tip, Plan was to use buggers but they didnt want anything to do with em today, tried just about every color and style. A good mayfly hatch came off about 1 p.m but was very short, maybe 30 mins, other then that a small but consistant midge hatch. Alot of splashy rises in the area, some were most likely carp. I did notice that the winters store has a sighn on the counter were you pay that states the artifical lure with barbless hooks rules for putah. Toaday I saw 3 groups of people bait fishing, But I think after watching most bait dunkers on putah I'm not too worried about em taking fish, cuz they dont know what the hell there doing.

I canoed from access 5 to Solano damn with my 2 younger brothers saturday. Trailed a woolly bugger on my fly and gave my bro (who only spinfishes) a hare's ear with a split shot, didnt get anything (wasnt really fishing though) I saw about 15 bait dunkers on the creek/lake. Most of whom were right next to the road. Also saw a dead carp, about 18in and skinny. Only saw one fly fisherman on the creek, about 1/4 mile below the island on the south side it looked like he was just getting started when i passed. Good little trip, had fun with the brothers, just a little peaved to see the bait fisherman sitting there slinging powerbait and worms in plain view of the raod. Where the he$$ is that warden when you need him

Sorry I couldn't make it out there, the list of things to get done before catching a flight on Sunday kept me off the creek, now  I'm down in Florida and will be spending the week taking the nephews out to the local bass ponds slinging Senko's on spinning rigs.  I'm still in for helping out with funds and posting signs, Saturday just turned out to be bad timing for me.

Otter and I made it out to the creek on Saturday. Sadly no one else was able to make it. We fished a slow section of the creek from float tubes. Otter is a machine! He had so many fish on it wasn't even funny. Seriously, everytime I looked over, he had a fish on. I, on the other hand, got my butt kicked. I fished Friday as well with Chemdoc who landed a 19"er. I was unable to catch anything that day either. After Chemdoc left, I did manage to hook a fish about 23" on a #16 olive caddis pupa. The fish was pretty skinny and didn't fight too much. The hook pulled loose as I was bringing it to net.

Come on JT I only landed four fish. If you guys meet JT on the creek he is easy to get along with and will give you some of his flies. I now have one of those olive midges that JT catches all his fish on. The fish of Putah are now in trouble. On saturday it was so windy that we were getting blown around. The fishing was slow due to the wind and the increase of almost 100cfs on friday. Does anyone know where you can get a weather report on wind conditions. Wind conditions are sometimes worse than flow fluctuations.

Otter, I check the winds at http://weather.msn.com/local.aspx?wealocations=wc:USCA1252#details .  The wind speeds and forcasts actually are for the Nut Tree Airport in Vacaville.  From my experience the creek wind seem to follow the pattern but not always the velocities.

This is the site that I check for weather and wind forecasts:

http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=winters%2C+ca

Just click on "Detail" and it will show the forecast throughout the day (every few hours).

For weather and wind forecasts I use weather.com.  I request the weather for "Winters CA", then I use the hour-by-hour option.  It reports by hour the temperature, the wind velocity and direction, and the %chance of precipitation for the next 36+ hours.  To be truthful, though, the wind velocities and directions don't always seem accurate.  I think the hills around Putah either block or intensify the wind.  Also, it seems that the wind almost always kicks up on the creek in the afternoon regardless of what the forecast says.
