I'm new to putah creek and have been reading these boards for their valuable information.
On my second trip out to putah after work yestereday (Thur Mar 29th), I parked at fishing access 4. My friend and I went down just to scout it out and cast a little bit for about an hour and then move on (around 7:15 PM). As we got to the road and started to approach the parking lot a WHITE EARLY 90s FORD TAURUS was pulled along side my car. As we got closer two individuals jumped up from behind my car, got into theirs, and drove off. We were still far away, but they drove by us and headed towards the lake. They were hispanic about 20-25 years of age.
As we got to the car my drivers side door handle had significant damage as someone had tried to pry it open, and my windshield also had some cracks that looked like they had attempted to pry it open. They actually didnt get into the car.
Sheriff says it happens a lot out there so be on the look out.
Sorry to hear about the car. That happened quite a bit last year, I was hoping the break ins were over... I hide everything that might be valuable in my vehicle at the start of my trip, reguardless. I figure no one will break into something that doesnt have anything valuable in it, though you never know. Welcome to Putah.
I had my van broken into twice last year at access 5. The CHP suggested that I leave my car unlocked with nothing of value inside. Since that time I leave my windows open and leave nothing inside. At least they can look through the car without breaking my windows, which they did in both break-ins.
I understand CHP's logic, but remember if anything serios did happen to your car and your insurance company should somehow on the off chance find out that it was unlocked or windows down, you would have a really hard time with your claim.
Sad that people who have a car (as in the case of the white Taurus) still feel the need to conduct themselves in a sub-human manner and vandalize other's property. What a world we have created.
It's a shame that his stuff goes on out there. Sorry for your bad luck.
Based on others writing that they had previously gotten broken into, it sounds like a common occurrence. As a matter of fact the Sheriff always seems to say that it happens a lot.(based on previous postings)
Obviously no one ever gets caught by the sheriff so it probably could be the same people doing it over and over again.....
This activity turns a nice relaxing fishing trip into a stressful event. I thought we went fishing to get away from the stress and pressure of everyday life.....
Once again sorry for your misfortune and the misfortune of others who have been broken into to.
sorry for your bad luck, every time I fish putah I am releived to find that my window isn't broken when i return to my car, I think about this every single time i fish there, and it really pisses me off. I assume that you guys that have experienced a break in don't have an alarm on your vehicle. I think the theifs know that your most likely not near by at access 4 and 5. This may sound extreme but my first thought after reading a post like this is, I guess i need to pack a gun when i fish there, I say this because i also got a very aggressive charge from a german shepard last summer, the owner got ahold of the dog just in time. I guess after a relatively peaceful winter of fishing putah It's time for the dum asses to return.
What a pain, thanks for the warning. Needless to say if anyone sees a white Taurus hanging around with any one who doesn't look like they are fishing write down the plates and share it here. If you get a chance to take a picture, like with a cell phone, that would be a handy thing to have around. We could compare notes and see if it's the same guys and could give the sheriff something to work with.
You can't count on the CHP or the sheriff to effectively address this, but if they had plate numbers, dates, and descriptions that correlated to dates of brake ins then you've narrowed the search from the entire haystack to just the needle.
I'm sorry about the break in, Marford. I hate it when all you want to do is go out and spend some time relaxing and fishing, only to return to your car vandalized. I never leave anything in sight in my car, and my alarm is loud as hell.
Captain, I can't believe you almost got mugged by a German Shepard. I usually bring my dog fishing with me, he doesn't like other dogs though. They would have drawn serious blood if a GSD ran up on me. My dogs really friendly with people, so if you ever see him out there don't be afraid to say hi to him.
One of the things that makes things more diffiicult is the fact that even if you see these jerks breaking into a car, there is no cell phone service on the road next to the creek. You would have to drive all the way to the Pardehsa store in order to get cell phone service (at least, that's how my cell phone is). Thus, the only way to stop these guys is to either confront them and beat the crap out of them or get their license plate number and report it after the fact.
That's a sad state of affairs. Confronting them could cost you your life, and chances are, their license number is stolen.
Being new to Putah Creek, this bothers me. Is this type of vandalism common? On the NCFFB board, this was also a recent topic. Go to http://www.ncffb.org/ and search Scariest Fishing Locations http://www.ncffb.org/index.cgi?frames=n;read=368843 for some recent reports on other streams in Northern California where fly fishermen have encountered these problems and worse.
going back to thecaptain's comment about bringing a fire arm of some sort, i don't think anyone should. The cal penal code says you must have a Conseeled Wepons Permit to carry a loaded or unloaded firearmm, unless you are at your home or place of bussiness. then you may openly display or conseel a firearm. If you call the sherif after an incident he might serch you for wepons. If he finds one it is a misdameener . Don't even think of putting the gun in the car. If found loaded, or w/ out a trigger lock of some sort it is also a misdameener. For more things you can and can't do with wepons in our great state of CA, look at the state laws. go to http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/forms/pdf/cfl.pdf
As far as firearms go, there are areas that I wouldn't fish without them. My dad and I have been glad to have had them on more than one occasion. Just don't be stupid. Like the western writer, Louis Lamour, says, "a gun is a tool." Like a shovel, a rake, or a fly rod, they have their purpose.

I found these statements but still don't understand whether or not it's legal to carry a holstered weapon that is or is not concealed.
NOTE: A firearm carried openly in a belt holster is not considered "concealed" as it applies to the above prohibition. (Penal Code § 12025(f).)
Section 12025 does not apply to or affect any of the following:
Penal Code Section 12025 does not apply to or affect the lawful transportation or possession of a firearm under specific circumstances, including, but not limited to, the following:
Licensed hunters or fishermen while engaged in hunting or fishing, or while going to or returning from such hunting or fishing expeditions.

It sounds to me like it is legal to carry a weapon when hunting or fishing as long you are in a location where it is lawful. I assume this means any area where you can lawfully hunt. I have seen a few people hunting quail near the creek. Does this mean it is lawful to carry a gun while fishing the creek?

Actually, there is a sign at access 5 posted no hunting or shooting. It would be a great place, though, with all of the quail, turkeys, and deer around there.
I usually only carry a firearm when I go to the sierra's, after all haven't you seen the movie deliverance....:laughing . I've been approached by some shady lookin characters during over night trips in the remote parts of the delta and was glad I had the ol 12 gauge handy.
I've never seen anyone hunting down there by #5. The ones I've seen were hunting further up stream. If there's no hunting allowed down by #5, then one may not be able to carry a firearm there. That's my interpretation anyway. I'm sure there are others who know how to correctly interpret these laws.

According to THE AUTHORITIES, because the creek is posted with signs prohibiting firearms, it is illegal to carry a firearm at Putah Creek. Therefore, if you find yourself in need of assistance kiss your a_s goodby or find a big rock and get ready to duke it out. Other areas lacking in regular patrols such as Lower Yuba, and much of the Sierra, the law provides that folks engaged in hunting or fishing are permitted to carry a weapon. If I come out there and see JT gunning it out with the rest of you returning fire, I'll just get out the lounge chair and the Keystone Light 40 ouncers and enjoy the entertainment. Then I'll just go catch all the fish cause you guys will have probably shot yourselfs in the A_S and wondering where everyone else went. I can't hit the side of a barn either. Mike
I did file a report, but havent checked on it. I've been back a few times since then with no problems, I just leave my door unlocked. I'm not sure why they tried to break into my car since the only things in it were 2 empty rod cases.
My car is old and already has damage on it, the lock still works so I have no problems, just hope everyone takes some precautions.
That sarx. I'm hesitant to go now. My car is newer and I have a hefty car payment. I really don't want any issues when I go fishing....this really sarx!
