As I've posted in other threads, these are the flies that catch most of my fish on Putah Creek and just about all trout inhabited waters: 1. Pheasant Tail nymph #16-20 2. Zebra Midge (black, red, olive) #18-22 3. Fox Poopah (tan, olive) #14-16 4. Micro Mayfly #16-20 5. Wooly Bugger (olive, black) #10-12 6. Damselfly nymph (olive) #12-14 7. Hare's Ear nymph (tan, olive) #16-20
Of course I do tie each of them a little different than the traditional patterns.

1. Red Brassie Emerger Size 16-18 2. Micro Mayfly Size 20-18 3. Red and Black Midge Emergers Size 20 and 22 4. Barr Emerger Tan size 16 5. Fox Poopah Tan and Olive size 14-20 6. Hares ear emerger size 20 to 16 7. Baetis Emerger Size 18-22 8. Rusty Spinner Size 20 9. Tan and Olive Z-wing size 16 10. Yellow PMD Dry size 22 also try black and olive. Hackle and thread.
That's just a small sample. All emergers except the Barr emerger are tied with cdc or light dun z-lon. If you tie flies you can come up with several versions of the above in various sizes and colors. Subtle changes in the flies can produce big changes in the size and number of fish caught.
