I read somewhere that the upper section of Putah before it runs into Berryessa holds smallies.  Is there good fly fishing up there?  Any good access?

You read correct, the putah creek and pope creek arms of berryessa have good fishing for smallies and largemouth. Access at the pope creek bridge is good, i havent accessed upper putah from shore, park at the the parking lot at the bridge and work up the arm with a float tube or kayak. The coves of upper berryessa also offer top notch fishing for bass, its a little cold right now but come mid april to mid may fishing should be excellent due to the spawn. Last april I fished from my float tube and  would catch a smallmouth and a few casts later catch a largemouth, this was with spinning gear though, its defenitly worth a try.

By Easter break the bass fishing at Barryessa is busted wide open.

My best luck has been just past the second bridge.  Park and head down to the cove, put in your float tube and work your way North.  Fish around the 2 islands (most fish come from the West side of the islands).

Never had much luck with the flyrod but 6lb test on a spinning reel tossing small plastics with a splitshot is a kick in the pants.
