I fished the creek this morning. It started out really slow. The creek was a little lower than it has been. At the first spot I fished there was a nice hatch going on, but I only saw one fish. I couldn't find any takers, so I moved on to greener pastures. The next spot had a nice Baetis hatch as well. I ended up hooking three, landing all of them. That is pretty rare, especially with a #20 midge. I say midge, but I think the fish were taking it as a mayfly. All of the fish were beautiful with orange "cuts" under their gills. One was 20", another was 19", and the last was a 14" football. His stomach was seriously bulging. It was ridiculous. He fought way harder than the other two, also. It rained pretty much the whole time I was there. The water clarity wasn't too bad, but it probably won't take too much more rain to turn the creek into chocolate milk.

I caught a few fish last summer with orange cuts under the gills, must have some cutthroat in em. I wanna make it up there this weekend but i'm afraid the water clarity may not be good. I am dieing to get out there and try my new rod and reel.
Right on JT! Nice to hear you got some good fish in today. I'll take those 3 on a day of fishing anytime What color midge were they dining on? I've had a lot of success with black lately, but got a few on olive, even bright red.
Most of the fish that I've caught lately were on an olive midge. In the slower water I'll use a red one. The traditional black Zebra Midge is always good as well.

Typically since Lk Berryessa is still way below the glory hole and the water coming from the lake is still clear,it doesn't take too long to clear up,maybe only a day or two generally speaking of coarse.
Congratulations on some good fishing. I fished the creek in three places on Feb 8th and had no action at all. It rained solidly throughout. I only saw one fish and used simlar flies to a couple of weks ago when I caught 39 fish in 3 1/2 hours. The difference was incredible. If it hadn't been for the one fish that turned below the surface, I would have thought the river had been chemically cleansed. I met another angler, Vic, and he had the same lack of action after fishing up and down several stretches of the river.
What the heck was up with the last few weeks, seems everyone has been catching fish, Maybe the warmer weather after that really cold snap we had ??? Or maybe their just really hungry after spawning. If anyone makes it up there today please let me know how the water clarity is, I wanna make it up there tommorrow.
It looks there is a new feature to the website that allows everyone to drop images into the website. I don't know if I did it right, but hopefully you will see a 20" trout caught in the rain yesterday. The fishing was slower yesterday, but the fish were bigger. It reminded me of steelhead fishing, except you could wade a lot easier. I can't believe it Bob 39 fish in three hours that has to be a Putah Creek record. You shouldn't feel bad when you have a slow day 39 fish would be what a typical fisherman would catch in 20 trips to Putah!!
