I know this is going to piss people off but I have to write this. I go on this site a lot and read all the reports and for the most part its very informative but I feel like if you have a great day on Putah and catch 20 fish keep it to yourself, there are so many people that view this site on a daily basis that the amount of people fishing the creek goes way up when someone reports a huge day on the creek or makes comments like the fish were stacked in there like cord wood. I know when I hear a report like that I will drop everything and be there the next day, as will tons of other people. I grew up in Washington fishing for steelhead in the coastal streams of the olympic peninsula and everyone was so tight lipped about where and the number of steelhead that they caught. I fished a stream in washington that only a handful of people even knew about, 10 fish steelhead days were the norm, the people that fished this stream kept it a well guarded secret that is until a writer from salmon trout and steelhead did a feature article on it. Now when you go there are about 20 to 30 fishermen there every day. Now I know that Putah isnt a secret but we can keep the crowds down a bit if people just tone down there reports. If you have an epic day you can just say yeah the fishing was pretty good I got a few on this pattern but there is no need to say WOW What a day I got 40!!!! Im sure most wont agree with me but I just had to write it. Keep your secrets to yourself especially the small creeks that cant handle much pressure.
I read this stuff all the time and then go out and get completely blanked. I live with it, but I think the braggadogia really isn't necessary. I personally think if I get to 5, I've got some other thingsto do and call it a day. I would like to see more fish another day, and not just beat up the creek. For me, Putah Creek is home as it is for everything living in it. I would just invite people to visitand treat the creek and its inhabitants with the respect it deserves. Mike
I guess we should just report when the fishing is poor? lighten up. I always get skunked anyways ! All fish i catch i try to land quickly to avoid hurting the fish and all fish are very carefully handled and revived, nobody has more respect for putah, or any place then i do !
To only report that the fishing is bad isn't the point of this board, or so I thought. Most people here have posted reports about multiple fish days. Though I respect where you are coming from edog, this isn't Washington, its Cali. Publicity has indeed ruined alot of places over the years, however, down playing fish counts isn't a good way to go about preserving putah. capt'n was undoubtedly really exited after a day like that, as most people I know will be. That being said, I fished the top section yesterday evening and saw more fisherman than I have seen in weeks. However, most of them didn't catch anything, though I cant talk...hooked one in about an hour and he broke me off. Solid fish though.
Hey edog, Im down with that. I fish the creek alot as it is my home water as well. I really dont like seeing the blown up reports on our creek at all. It does draw more crowds which usually means less options to fish. I usually get my solitude out there during the week in the last hour of the day. I've had crazy good days out there that only I know about. But thats the way I like it. Other folks are different they like to let the whole world know that they had a great day. But most of the people who chase reports are the 90% who dont catch, Just be thankful we're in the 10% who do.
I've fished Putah since the early 70's. I remember when it seemed like I owned the river. I could go up and fish any stop at almost any time and be by myself or with a friend. If there was a car in one area I would simply go to another spot. Now the river is crowded with fishermen. I have no control over that. It's the same all over the state.
I simply try to fish where and when I can. I'm glad fly fishing is a growing sport and most of us are catch and release fisherman. Before the computer fishing reports could be weeks old. The catch phrase then was, "You should have been here last week." I enjoy reading the board and finding out what flies people are using. I've been using the same fly on Putah for 35 years (a double renegade), but thanks to this site I use a slew of new droppers.
Enjoy a day on the water. Try to avoid crowds and go around people when you fish. You may catch a few less fish but the experience can be the same.
I thought that the purpose of this board was to give a "fishing report." That's exactly what I do. When I catch fish, I give a report. When I don't catch fish, I give a report. I don't need to inflate or deflate the numbers of fish or sizes of fish. I just give an accurate report. I believe that we should all do just that. There are many out there that don't a chance to fish very often and the reports can ease the withdrawals that they go through. That was my case last quarter in school. I didn't get to fish for two months. The reports kept me going.
I have to think about Bono who set up this forum that we all enjoy. Thanks, Bono. If everyone held back their reports, or only reported the bad, his business as a guide would be shot. Who would hire a guide on a creek that apparently didn't produce?
I can see where edog is coming from, though. It can be disheartening to go to the creek and find that all of your favorite holes are full of fishermen. There has to be solution that will benefit all. Perhaps we can post results of our trip without the location or a more vague description of the location. Any more feedback?

I can totally agree with both sides of this topic, and being a guide on my home water has been something that I have struggled with for a long time.A large portion of my clients are from out of state and are only here for buisness or vacation and will never fish the creek again so no harm done in my eyes. But the added publicity the website gives the creek obviously will contribute to the increase in pressure but also will educate people about issues that Putah has and therefore can be used as a tool to actually help solve some of these issues. So I guess in a nutshell what I'm diong for the creek is both good and bad hopefully the good out weighs the other. On another note I noticed that a new member "old Grouch" mentioned that he used to use or maybe still uses a double renegade. If this is the same guy I'm thinking of,I met him at Putah creek around Nov-Dec about 20 or so years ago and I witnessed him catch fish after fish, all big ones on a small glo bug and a double renegade with a little variation on that fly that I will not disclose here.At the time I had not yet tried flyfishing and what I saw him do that day changed me forever. He gave me a little instruction on how it was done and showed me his setup. From that day on (I'm almost certain of this)I never bait or spinfished again. Thanks again "Old Grouch" for introducing me to a sport and a memory that will be with me for a lifetime. Greg
I have had days when its bam! One right after another (not on putah I almost only get one or two hits and a fish or two and for me thats hot) is fun, but I dont really agree with people that go out and catch 20 or so fish in a day from the same area every few days. If its hot report it, in my opinion, and tell your "fish tales" I like reading them, but to the people that go out all the time and catch as many fish as possible thats not my style. Its respect for the fish, the enviroment, and it gives other fishermen a chance. Just my two cents. One person said in another bulletin a while ago we aren't out there to hook a fish, drag it around the water, and then let it go; its more than that, the nature, experience and so on. Lastly, I really like this site because I get more than just a fishing report. I get new ideas, opinions, tips, and important issues are raised.
As a retired teacher and school administrator I always like to hear that I've changed someone's life. Your description sounds like something I would do, although I rarely use glow bugs in October and November. In truth, I doubt that very few of the people I showed the double renegade to switched from their spinners and hardware. I'm glad you tried it and switched over to fly fishing.
I probably was one of the first to use it locally having found the pattern in a now defunk Fly Tying Magazine somewhere around 1980. They touted it as a fly used in streams in Arizona. I immediately tied up a dozen in sizes from 10 to 16 and it was an instant success on Putah. I gave some to two of my friends and they started using it. Its accounted for many huge fish over the years. Later on people would ask what I was using and I would show them, and I'm sure others have found it hanging in trees. As one gets older you tend to forget about whats around you. The trees and bushes are sometimes decorated with them after I've fished a stretch. I've used it with success all over the state and still use it, but after having tied thousands of them over the years I have to force myself to tie up a batch of them several times a year. I also tie a variation thats works with steelhead.
Actually, I've been reading and occasionally posting or responding to someone for several years on this site. Unfortunately, I tend to forget my password and have had to reapply 3 or 4 times over the years.
WOW, i didnt think this would turn into this ! I dont find the creek crowded very often, sometimes i go a whole day on a weekend even without seeing maybe one or two people, but i never fish the bridge area. I was just a little excited after a good day on the water, i only have been flyfishing since april and havent caught very many fish on a fly, I was using this as a learning experience, and i did learn alot. I wouldnt be the least bit surprised if when i fish putah again next weekend, that if i decide to try this spot again i get nothing. I'm just happy to be able to spend time in the outdoors and being able to participate in the art of flyfishing, i dont care if i catch fish, thats just a bonus if i happen to catch something. That being said, anyone know what that pheasant tail looking thing with a white rubber leg on each side is called, i just thought it looked cool and cant remeber what its called, just a fly i picked at random, but it worked.
I don't know what it's called, but the fish could be taking it as a water boatman. There are tons of them in the slower sections of the creek and the fish tear 'em up.

All of you are very funny. The best thing to do is to be vague about "secret spots" and numbers of fish unless you want to see lots of people the next time you go fishing. The creek is only a few miles long, so anyone with experience on the creek will know the best spots. From my experience the best spots are the ones that haven't been fished that day. If anyone asks say you were fishing at the bridge and you had a good day. Then there will be 25 cars at the bridge instead of 15.
Hey, if you are gonna report, then report. If you had a good day ie: 50 fish, you were lucky or brilliant. All any of us really need is maybe what you found working on our fairly limited menu, and maybe just that the fish showed up. If you saw otters fist-fighting with bobcats, I enjoy hearing every detail. The crazy stuff in the wild is why I go anyway. I was fishing on a remote little stream and found I was surrounded by deer, bunnies, turtles and the works. There will be no roadmap provided. Unfortunately, the stream does have poachers as well and it just does not need more traffic. Putah Creek gets pounded on a fairly regular basis, but I enjoy the company I have met there and through this site as well. I will share any creek info with you there including where I caught the dozen 18"+. If you guessed the spawning beds, nice shot. I've never caught a dozen, nor anything in the 18" + catagory at Putah. If you tell me you have, I have no reason to believe otherwise. I'm tired, I need Scotch. Oh yeah, by the way, Death to Spincasting (Nothing personal, mind you.)
Hey Yukon,it was good to finally meet you the other day on the creek,I have you're hat give me a call and I'll get it to you.I have some other info to post but it will be under another heading. Bono

Exactly. Anyone who fishes the creek will know where to go and how to present their flies. But I think we should leave spots out and concentrate more on flies and techniques.
We all know Putah gets crowded. Hell, its one of the few places open during the winter (I've never even fished there in the Spring, Summer, or Fall). There's no point at getting mad at other guys, unless they stiff arm your spot, of course. I met a guy the other day that really didn't know what he was doing, i told him to wade out a little bit and where to cast, and within a few minutes her caught a fish...it made his day.
