I am currently looking into starting an organization to protect the fish and Putah's surroundings in the inner dam region(the area we all fish). To date there is nobody doing this and I think it's about time. The issues to look at would include monitoring the flows with a wintertime increase for the spawners, mudsnail issues, cleanups, regulation changes to protect the fish ect.If any of you-all out there have expierience legal or otherwise,or just want to get involved let me know.I will keep everyone posted through this forum when things develop.I also called a DFG representative and inquired about the use of barbless treble hooks on Putah and all suposed fly fishing and catch and release waters in California. From what I understood he said it was an oversite by the dept and apparently nobody caught the mistake. He also said that he would like to meet with myself and who ever else may be interested to talk about it and how it should be changed. He seemed concerned and very willing to work with us but also stated that this needs to be done sooner than later so there is time to change the regs by next season.I will also let everyone know about this meeting as soon as I get a firm date.

I have a ton of experience with the Law, it's just not the kind of "law" experience your looking for .  I mostly broke it as a younger man.

I'd love to do whatever I can.

Greg,  As we have talked in the past, count me on on this organization.  let me know when the meeting with F&G is, as I would like to attend if I am able to based upon my other business demands.  Congratulations on getting this ball rolling.

Did you happen to talk with Roger Bloom at DFG Greg?  I ran into him fishing Putah a month ago and we talked about the regs on the creek.  He mentioned an interest in tightening them, even to the extent of making it barbless, C&R year round.  He is an avid fly fisherman and an excellent resource.

I am definitely interested in helping out with this effort in any way needed, so count me in as well.

Phil

I'd be happy to help out anyway i can, i dont have any legal experience or anything. I would really like to see more done to improve the lower section below solano lake, try and get a slamon and steelhead run going every year, i hiked the lower creek last sunday ( was to windy to fish) and i did notice what looked like a few man made spawning riffles, looked very hard for any sighns of redds or fish and didnt see anything, but i think those man made areas are useless with the water so low, some areas the creek was no more then a trickle ! I did notice that putah creek is listed on the steelhead report card so i assume there must be a few. I guess stocking a few salmon and steelhead would be out of the question with dfg's limited budget.

I would also be interested to attend a meeting with DFG and to help in any way I can. Sorry, no legal experience. It would be wonderful if Putah Creek could be designated as barbless, C&R all year around. I am concerned that with fishing allowed all year around now, that too much fishing takes place over the redds. Perhaps we could designate some areas to be left alone to give the fish a chance to spawn without being caught over again.

Hi Bono,

I would also be interested in giving some assistance in regard to your efforts.  As a local fishery, I can also check in with DVFF to see if some sort of non profit funding for our efforts could be supplied.  Although, I need to be cautious in my direct invoivement, as my firm has contracts with DFG and I need to be careful due to personal interest and possible company conflict of interests.

Let me know how I can help, and if you would like me to contact my local club members for any assistance you might need.

Kindest regards to you for all of your efforts in this regard,
Dave

Hi Bono, great idea, I would be happy to be involved.  I have no legal experience but could probably help in other areas.  It's a unique fishery for the area and worthy of some additional support.

I'm really happy to see the # of positive responses to this issue.I met with a gentleman yesterday concerning how we should go about doing this and I guess the first step should be that we all meet, maybe at the creek on a weekend real soon and kind of just talk about things that concern us all as well as designating who can do what.Any of you are welcome to call me if you need to go over any details.I'm thinking that Sunday Feb 25th @ 9am might be a good date for me.Let me know by e-mail or phone call if any of you all can make that date or if maybe it should be changed. Bono

Bono, I'd like to come to the meeting, but I have a two hour drive to get to Putah Creek from Los Altos Hills. Would 10am be possible?

I'd like to go to the meeting, but Sundays are not good for me.  I have church in the morning and usually have other meetings throughout the day.  Are Saturdays not good for you?

Ok how about Sat 24th Feb 10 am? By the way had a great day yesterday on the creek, the fish took anything that was thrown to them. All of the fish seemed to be in one 75 yard stretch of water and outside of that particular area the fishing was slow.

I may have to work on 24th, but I'll make it if I can. Where is the meeting?

Bono, I think I followed you on the river. Another angler said your truck had been there. Fishing was very good, but I caught most on a size 22 green midge. They seemed to become shy of the size 18 and 20. I used a 5x tippett, so the fish were not too tired when they were released and they all seemed very strong.

I think that the 24th will work for me.  You mentioned possibly meeting at the creek.  Is that still the plan?

So far it looks like we can meet on Sat Feb 24th 10 am at access #5 parking lot.I have absolutely no expierience in this whatsoever and I do not know how to delegate the tasks at hand,so I'm hoping that somebody out there that has done something similar to what we're trying to accomplish.I feel it is my responsibility as a guide and somebody who is fortunate enough to have a website that is one of the most popular flyfishing web sites on the west coast (thanks to  Kieth my friend and webmaster) to use this forum to try to make some positive changes on our beloved Putah. But the reality of the matter is personally I have little time to fully dedicate to such an undertaking, already running two businesses coaching football;rugby and basketball teams for my kids and being a dad and husband. So my hopes are that we can find someone who can run with the torch that I'm currently trying to light. thanks Bono

I cant attend the meeting, but I am Business major at Sac St. (graduating senior). My emphasis in on marketing so if I can make the time I would like to help with getting the word of the Organization out once its underway. Not only would help fish, fishermen and Putah, it would look very good on a resume! Im just swamped with school and my mothers recovering from major heart surgery so I couldnt dedicate any time for at least a month or so, but dont let the idea die, keep the flame burning.
