Fly fishing PC for the first time
Permalink

I am heading out to San Francisco to visit my sister the 1st week of March aNd had hoped to get up to PC for a day.  I am from Kansas City, and my "home" stream is Roaring River in Southern Missouri.  I have never fished west of Colorado/New Mexico before, so I am excited to try a new location.

I have read through many of the posts on your forum and it looks like fishing during the spawning season is a major concern.  First, I think it's awesome that you have such a great community of anglers up there that cares so much about the habitat.  Second, what advice can you give me on fishing PC on or around 3/3?  Will I still be running into spawning fish?  Are there areas that are safer to fish where there are actually fish?  How do I do this right without wasting the trip?

Also, my wife told me to ask if there is anything for wives to do in the are a while their husbands dish all day?

Thanks for whatever resources and tips you can provide.

Flows will be higher. Fish are usually everywhere. Id look for deeper water or long slow tail waters. Fish should be done spawning by March and on the post spawn bite. Access 3 gets hammered. I'd start above access 3 if you're looking to nymph. Then up where the bridge is. That's where most people fish. Realistically there are fish throughout the river. If you wanna get away from crowds stay away from the access points 3 and the bridge access and just explore. Lots of good water throughout the river. Also use a lot of weight. PM me if you want further details. Arkansas is s long ways to get skunked.

Dries can work but not as well as subsurface stuff. Plus you're going to be doing A LOT more roll casting then over hand casting. You could try swinging soft hackles.

this time of year can sometimes be difficult, the fish are now post spawn mode and still a little skiddish and typically skinny, although you still can have some good days. the advice from Mr Flyguy is good stuff. as far as your wife is concerned, the town of Winters which is only 10 mins from the creek and is a cool place to keep her busy for about 3 or 4 hours if she really took her time. there is a couple of pretty good places to eat or have a glass of wine like Preserve , Steady Eddys, or Putahcreek Café.Or if she wants to shop ( what woman doesn't) she can go to the Vacaville outlets about 20 mins from the creek. That will keep her busy for an entire day and give you maximum time on the water.Might cost you a pretty penny though! Good luck
