Costa Rica fly fishing.

Went to Costa Rica a couple of weeks ago with my wife and some friends.  Got in a couple of 1/2 days of panga fishing although it wasn't a fishing trip.  I blanked out on snook and roosterfish, but got a lot of 5lb bonito which were plenty feisty enough.  Interestingly, the most effective flies were an all-white lead eyed flashtail clouser 1/0, and a #2 green gummy minnow.  Chartreuse/white, red/white and blue/white clousers were ineffective as were surf candies.

On one day of fishing I had 2 Costa Rican guides taking me out and they threw all their spinning lures at the bonito and didn't get a single grab which puzzled all of us.  For some unknown reason the bonito would only hit the flies!

Here's some links to the videos that I made using a ContourRoam head camera and MS Movie Maker:

Costa Rica Bonito on a fly rod.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaJ4rVglhvw
Costa Rican Needlefish.   http://youtu.be/-IJ3vIqNCeA

Set the video quality to 720p to get the best resolution.

Next time I'm going to Costa Rica in July when the roosters and dorado are thick.

Note: Youtube blacklisted my first bonito video for copyright infringement so I changed the music and it now works.

The Bonito video was blocked, but seems to be working now.  That is an amazing boil of fish out there!  The gummy minnow works yet again!  Looks like fun with the needlefish.  Did you bring some bonito back for smoking?  Nice job Clay

Hi Chris,

The video was blocked because I originally had Steve Miller Band's "Keep on Rockin' Me Baby" as part of the sound track.  I like that version so much better.

No bonito coming home for smoking.  I grew up in LA South Bay and ate a ton of bonito smoked by my uncles and cousins caught on the Redondo Beach breakwater.  Got sick of it.  Curiously, I never ate any sashimi bonito until this trip and like it a lot (gotta bleed and ice 'em immediately).

What was pretty interesting is the 2nd day out, I had 2 guides and we spent a lot of time trying to raise roosters and snook and got blanked again.  So we went for bonito (and jack crevalle) which were schooling again like the video and easily caught on the fly.  I told the guides that they should fish too.  To our mutual astonishment, they threw every kind of hardware and plug in their boxes at the big bonito schools and got no hits whatsoever.  I said if they ever wanted to catch fish, they better get a flyrod!
