An Introduction to Putah Creek Trout's New Organization
Permalink

Dear Putah Creek Forum Members:

I want to take this opportunity to announce the launch of the Putah Creek Trout official web site, http://www.putahcreektrout.org. If you visit the forum regularly, you have likely seen references to some of the activities of the Putah Creek Trout organization in various posts.  The organization was started by several members of this forum who wanted to improve the Putah fishing experience for all, with the ultimate goal of making it a blue ribbon fishery, hopefully with a Wild Trout designation.

This core of dedicated volunteers has made significant progress in working with the Department of Fish and Game and other stakeholders.  The head of the Wild Trout Program from DFG has confirmed that Putah is a viable candidate for evaluation for Wild Trout designation. This is great news and means that their evaluation moves to the next level, Phase 2-Assessment.

The Assessment phase consists of a series of studies that will measure several characteristics of the trout population.  Their on stream activities will include fish surveys, study of reproductive potential (spawning), and quantifying angler use (angler surveys)-as we know this last activity is already underway.  A timeline to complete these studies is being developed by DFG; realistically, it may take a few years to complete the assessment.

Putah Creek Trout is increasing its interactions with DFG and other stakeholders in several important areas. It's expected that there may be opportunities for members of this forum to volunteer. Even if you dont have time to volunteer, everyone can help make the fishery in Putah better by filling out angler surveys and reporting violations to DFG.

I encourage you to visit the web site and take a look at what the group is all about.

Sincerely,

Greg Bonovich
